The Day America Stood Still

Blackout......Then World War III

America's Greatest Vulnerability by Trish Regan

The Day America Stood Still

Around 2010, I read a report about the Carrington Event, considered to be one of the most powerful solar storms ever noted in recorded history.  Here is what happened…..

“On Thursday, Sept. 1, 1859, British astronomer, Richard Carrington, was sketching the projected image of a solar flare. As he observed a large sunspot group, two kidney shaped spots of blinding light appeared on his shaped glass screen, where an 11 inch image of the sun rapidly changed as he watched.

The next day at dawn, virtually the entire world witnessed auroras in every color, blazing forth so brightly that witnesses reported being able to read newspapers by their light at night.  Similar experiences were reported at latitudes as far south as Cuba and Hawaii. Normally, equatorial auroras are unheard of.

Today’s astronomers say that Richard Carrington recorded an extremely rare magnetic explosion of some sort, just above the Sun’s surface.  Also, the only “electronic” system in existence at the time was the telegraph, which was powered by wet-cell batteries, and worked by the opening and closing of switches.  The clacking keys transmitted code along a primitive system of electrical wires.  Following the Carrington event, these systems began to malfunction on a worldwide basis.  So strong was the electrical induction of the magnetic fields produced by these solar flares that sparks from the electrical induction set the telegraph paper on fire. When the operators disconnected the wet-cell batteries that powered the telegraph, the telegraphs still continued to function, so strong was the electrical induction.

Experts say that if such an event were to happen today, it would produce a global catastrophe.  Currently we have technology that wasn’t dreamed of in 1859 – a system of high-voltage electric power grids.  Not only that, but these grids are controlled by computers, which control hundreds of huge transformers.  The National Academy of Sciences issued a report that is chilling in its implications.  It states if another Carrington event (or even a similar eruption of lesser power) were to happen today, the entire U. S. power grid would burn out within a period of a minute or two!

Think of it, everything electrical would stop – lights, motors, air-conditioning, heating, communications, the internet and more.  A real emergency would ensue.  Transportation would halt.  Supermarkets would run out of food.  Gas station pumps would cease to function because gasoline would not be able to be pumped.  Financial markets and banks do business electronically so they would shut down!  There can be no question about it, such an event would bring the civilized world to a halt.14

The Carrington Event took place in 1859.  That was over 150 years ago!  Is there any concern today for an event like that taking place today?  Definitely!  On Dec. 15, 2010 Liz Goodwin reported in “The Lookout” that a series of solar filaments which had been lurking atop the sun for weeks finally exploded which released high energy plasma into the solar system.  So significant was this release of electromagnetic energy from these explosive solar flares, NASA scientists dubbed it “The Great Eruption”.  NASA scientist Karel Schrijver concluded, “We see that solar storms can be global events, playing out on scales we scarcely imagined before.”  Thankfully, these high energy storms disperse before reaching our atmosphere.  But precedent certainly shows this will not always be the outcome as the Carrington Event has shown.

But it just wasn’t the danger of natural events that began my concern of how to protect my family against one of the most catastrophic dangers involving the takedown of the national electric grid.  Actually, it was a terrorist act that actually took place that really got my attention.  Here is what happened….

On April 16, 2013 a trio of men slipped past security cameras in a remote substation in upstate California.  They were able to cut power to the site’s emergency phone system.  Armed with military assault rifles, they rained down bullets on critical equipment.  The attack took less than 20 minutes, destroyed $15 million in equipment and most important…nearly caused a statewide blackout across California.  Thankfully, quick thinking engineers where able to redirect the flow of electricity before losing control of the system.

The conclusion: Jon Wellinghoff, former chairman of the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), called it “The most significant incident of domestic terrorism involving the grid that has ever occurred”.  The Wall Street Journal quoted a former official who believes the attack was merely a “dress rehearsal for a larger event.”  And Rich Lordan, a senior executive for the Electric Power Research Institute, said the attack “appears to be preparation for an act of war”.  But these are not the only voices crying “DANGER”.

Consider what the head of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security had to say, “There is an imminent threat from ISIS to the national electric grid.”  Also Iran and North Korea are both actively pursuing ways to take down our grid, according to President Reagan’s former Science Advisor, Dr. William Graham.

David Fessler, an electrical engineer and chief Energy and Infrastructure Strategist for one of the top financial firms in the world believes this event could portend incredible devastation to our country.  His analysis has revealed that there are approximately 55,000 substations in our country.  According to FERC, and this is their exact language: “Destroy NINE interconnected substations…and the entire Untied States GRID would be down for at least 18 months, and probably longer.”  If such an event takes place, it would knock out power to more than 300 million Americans.  Our nation has approximately 350 million people living on its mainland, therefore, for all practical purposes this would affect the entire nation.

Where does the problem in all this lie?  It’s the availability and sustainability of electrical transformers. John Kappenman of MetaTech states when electric transformers blow, they can’t be repaired in the field.  And most will not be able to be repaired due to level of destruction each one would sustain.  He states that at this time, there is a one to three year delay between placing an order for a new transformer and getting one.And herein lies the reason why it could take America 18 months to recover from a catastrophe such as this, if not longer.

That is why I believe the takedown of the national electrical grid is one of the greatest dangers we face in our nation at this time.  Just think about it, not having electricity for 18 months or longer.  Please consider the seriousness of this situation and the danger it poses.  Realize that the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) has come to this conclusion, not some self serving “off the grid” guru or financial promoter trying to capitalize on fear and “end of the world” scenarios.

So what would it be like if we lost electricity for an extended period of time?  Essentially, our entire economy would be brought down.  Consider the collateral effects: all electronic transactions could not be executed.  Stores could not process credit card transactions, which most of America relies on to conduct business.  Even cash transactions could not be properly executed since registers could not operate.  Vendors could not be paid.  Banks would be shut down because the mass of people wanting to get cash would overwhelm the system multiple times over.  Not only that, banks could not carry out electronic transactions or money transfers either, making them totally non-functional.  The entire banking system would freeze-up and then collapse.  With so little cash, even if registers or tills could be manually operated, people for the most part would not have enough cash to pay for anything.

Since gas stations rely on electrical pumps to deliver gas into gas tanks, cars would soon not be able to operate until electricity was restored.  You no longer could go to work unless you lived but a few miles from your workplace.  But what good would that do if your business needs electricity to operate.  And even if your company was totally energy self-sufficient, goods and services no longer could be delivered because fuel is not available.  City and town water would probably shut down because these pumps require electricity as well.  Unless you had natural gas, you would not be able to cook food.  And whatever you have in your frig will spoil within a few days.  If you live in Florida and other hot temperate spots in the nation than the only thing which would bake or boil is you because of temperatures going into the high 90’s and possibly triple digits inside your home – especially in the summer.

Moreover, financial stock markets and brokerage firms will also be frozen.  Therefore, you most likely will not be able to perform vital stock market transactions.  If so, you will probably lose it all since the markets will tank to levels never seen before.  Sadly, there is nothing you will be able to do about it. Even if emergency electrical power was available for phone service, the system would be so overwhelmed, you most likely would not be able to get through to execute your trades.  And even if you could, like banks, stock brokerage firms would not be able to process electronic transactions.  Worse, if you wanted to liquidate your accounts to get sorely needed cash, this again will also not be possible because like banks, they will not have the cash to cover the requests.  Can you grasp the enormity of the problem?  Can even conceive of the utter devastation this will bring?”

No, not really.  One can never fully grasp the immensity and collateral effects that can take place with the collapse of the electric grid of this magnitude.  And to add even greater weight to a potential catalyst that can bring on an electrical grid failure, we now need to be concerned about cyberattacks.  We now know that cyberwarfare attacks have this capability as well.  The closest example of this was the takedown of Colonial Pipeline. Here is what happened according to Wikepedia….

On May 7, 2021, Colonial Pipeline, an American oil pipeline system that originates in Houston, Texas and carries gasoline and jet fuel mainly to the Southeastern United States, suffered a ransomware cyberattack that impacted computerized equipment managing its pipeline. The company halted all pipeline operations to contain the attack. Overseen by the FBI, the company paid the amount that was asked by the hacker group (75 bitcoins or $4.4 million) within several hours.  Upon receipt of the ransom, an IT tool was provided to the Colonial Pipeline Company by DarkSide to restore the system.

Within a few days, fuel shortages began to appear in five states, mostly in the south.  Thankfully, by May 15, eight days later, all Colonial Pipeline systems returned to normal.

What were the effects of this attack?  The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration issued a regional emergency declaration for 17 states and Washington, D.C., to keep fuel supply lines open on May 9.  Although Colonial does primarily operate in the southeastern United States, it transports gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from Texas to as far away as New York.  Incredibly, about 45% of all fuel consumed on the East Coast arrives via this pipeline system.   In the final analysis, it was the largest cyberattack on an oil infrastructure target in the history of the United States.

Can you imagine the consequences of such an attack on multiple fronts?  Energy distribution systems, electric grid distribution systems, banking and even communication systems.  The list could be endless.  Therefore, a well coordinated high level cyberattack by any hacker or hacker group could result in serious shutdowns involving infrastructure management systems.  This could involve local, regional and even national shutdowns with catastrophic consequences.

As though this wasn’t a sufficient cause to have one consider possible solutions to combat such devastating events, add to this another danger such as a nuclear generated electromagnetic pulse (EMP). An nuclear EMP is not a natural event such as the Carrington Event, but brought about by man himself.  Essientially, a nuclear generated EMP is almost identical to a solar electromagnetic pulse.  In this case, a fairly good sized nuclear warhead is exploded in our atmosphere well above ground, around 12-24 miles high. Amazingly, there are hardly any blast effects experienced on the ground rendering the area free of physical damage.  However, the electromagnetic pulse generated is great enough where practically all electronic devices (any device that contains and is controlled by computer chips) such as computers, TVs, cars, appliances – almost everything – is “fried” by the pulse.  It has been determined that 9 to 12 strategically placed nuclear weapons in our atmosphere throughout our country could take down the entire national electric grid. This is something to be seriously concerned about.

The following account was written by Trish Regan in American Consequences on Sept. 28, 2020.  It provides a very recent assessment where America stands with protections against EMP and electrical grid events.  This is a very sobering outlook and hopefully will help you determine the steps you feel you should take to protect you and your family.

Blackout...Then World War III

Hurricane Isaias’ storm clouds came rolling in fast last month…

I was immersed in writing my recent American Consequences story on Venezuela and the threat of socialism to the U.S., occasionally glancing at the windows as the sky grew more ominous. Finally, the loud wind and rain won my attention. Several trees crashed across the road, splitting the neighbor’s fence in half. Then, the lights went off… the TV entertaining my three children powered down… and my computer Wi-Fi was gone.

Usually, I’m better prepared for these things.

In my early days as a network news correspondent, I would “parachute” into many a hurricane. I knew the drill… I’d load up on fuel, water, snacks, cash, candles, a cooler, flashlights, and extra battery-powered chargers for my cellphone and computer. I’d make sure I was in a protected location where our live truck could still send a signal from high enough ground. And I knew to seek shelter during the worst of the storm…

It’s the reason why during Hurricane Sandy, when we lived in lower Manhattan, I insisted my husband and I book a set of hotel rooms for us and the kids uptown – on the high ground of Manhattan’s upper east side. “Just in case,” I told him. (He thought I was overreacting.)

We wound up at that hotel for more than a month. Clearly, my hurricane training comes in handy.

But not this time… I was unprepared for Isaias’ aftermath. I knew the storm was heading our way, but I hadn’t anticipated its full wrath.

A full 98% of our little New England community had no power for days. No one could make calls, gas up their car, get money from the ATM, or even buy food from the store. Which got me thinking… and researching…

What if it was 98% of the country?

It’s much more possible than you think. It could happen tomorrow. And the result would be catastrophic. There would be no ability to connect with each other. No ability to get money from a bank. No ability for food to be distributed. Water access would be limited… and this is why a congressional report from 2016 predicts that if the lights went out – we risk losing 90% of the American population within a year (Comment: this truly is a sobering statistic which should wake us up to begin preparing for such a possibility, even if you only begin by buying a flashlight).

In modern times, we take electricity and connectivity for granted. But as I saw on the ground in New Orleans, where I reported for six weeks during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, we must be better prepared.  In fact, when you finish reading this piece, I think you’ll agree… When it comes to our power grid, we need to be on the offense.

Full disclosure, as I began my research for this story… I didn’t quite grasp how terrifying this possibility really was.

American's Greatest Vunerability by Trish Regan

I had heard concerns about America’s greatest vulnerability from some of my military contacts throughout the years…

But somehow it always gets lost in the midst of the other day-to-day headlines. For example, did President Donald Trump have a mini stroke that weekend a year ago when he went to the hospital? (I spoke to him by phone the Monday following the incident, and he swore it was all routine.)

Meanwhile, did Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi really not wear a mask when she took an illegal trip to a local San Francisco hair salon… or was it a “setup”? (The hypocrisy is certainly frustrating, given she’s insisting everyone else wear a mask, but does it really matter?)

With these he-said, she-said stories taking up pundits’ time, who in the media can focus on a potential attack that could destroy America?  Apparently, no one. And that needs to change. America’s power grid is our greatest vulnerability.

Four years ago, Congress was warned by its own Electro Magnetic Pulse (“EMP”) Commission (in a 2016 report I referenced above) that an attack could “shut down the U.S. electric power grid for an indefinite period, leading to the death within a year of up to 90% of all Americans” due to looting, a lack of food and water, and desperation attacks.

According to one of the authors of that congressional report and the current head of the presidential EMP task force…

“Everything is in blackout and nothing works. The EMP sparks widespread fires, explosions, and all kinds of industrial accidents. Firestorms rage in cities and forests. Toxic clouds pollute the air and chemical spills poison into already polluted lakes and rivers. In seven days, the over 100 nuclear power reactors run out of emergency power and go Fukushima, spreading radioactive plumes over the most populous half of the United States [this takes place because the water coolant systems used to control the reactor operate on electricity which will no longer work. Even the electricity generated by the nuclear power plant cannot be used in it’s own operation because it needs to be attenuated to the proper voltage levels among other such factors, as ironic as this may seem]. There is not even any drinking water and the national food supply in regional warehouses begins to spoil in three days. There was only enough food to feed 320 million people for 30 days anyway.

And yet, our government has repeatedly failed to address the issue.

An EMP is a short burst of electromagnetic energy. My friend Neil Grossman, mathematician, physicist, constitutional law scholar, global investor, vineyard owner, and former European central banker (yeah, just your all-around basic genius) described it to me like this: “Imagine going to a Rolling Stones concert, standing in front of the speakers and all of a sudden they are turned on for a second at maximum power. Now multiply that by say 100 billion or 100 trillion times, maybe more… It is the shortest, most powerful blast of energy you can imagine.”

He elaborated by saying, “Imagine standing at ground zero when a thermonuclear detonation occurs… What you need to understand is electromagnetic waves are a form of energy.”

ONE. BIG. MASSIVE. DESTRUCTIVE FORCE OF ENERGY

In addition, Neil says, “the electromagnetic pulse issue is interesting and quite complicated. Sources can be either natural or man-made. Natural sources would include solar flares, which, when powerful, can be disruptive… as well as high energy cosmological sources like supernovae, collisions of black holes and the like… But, in general, natural EMP sources are so distant that the effect is relatively muted.” (Comment: except in the case of the Carrington Event as described earlier).

The type to really worry about is the non-natural, or man-made EMP.

That EMP would destroy most of our country’s grid almost instantaneously. We’d have no way to get gas, no way to get money out of banks, no computers, no phones, no lights, no electricity… There would be no way to transport food or care for those in hospitals. It would be quite literally lights out. And there would be a massive loss of life as I mentioned before… According to government reports, 90% of Americans would die… and, well, your guess as to what happens then is as good as mine.

According to Grossman, “a high-altitude detonation of a powerful nuclear device would release a powerful EMP.” So powerful that scientists first discovered the EMP fallout of a hydrogen bomb during a test in 1962… Lights were burned out in Honolulu – 1,000 miles from the test location. Which means what if China, perhaps using Iran or North Korea, ever wanted to use an EMP to take out the United States? Completely doable.

FAR WORSE THAN PEARL HARBOR

According to a new report released this summer (2020) from the EMP Task Force on National and Homeland Security, China now has the ability to conduct a massive EMP attack on the United States.

China has created at least three types of weapons designed to attack our electric grid… And these technologies (all stolen from the U.S.) would enable them to employ a “surprise Pearl Harbor” assault that could send Americans into a deadly blackout.

Dr. Peter Pry, the executive director of the EMP task force set up by President Trump, says China not only has these super-EMP weapons in its arsenal, it knows how to protect itself against an EMP attack from us, and has developed protocols to conduct a first-strike attack – even though it denies it would ever do that.

Just to reiterate… China currently has the capability to conduct a first strike, a massive attack on our power grid, and while China says it wouldn’t dream of it… we’d be naïve to assume China wouldn’t employ such horrific tactics. Gordon Chang, who wrote the book Coming Collapse of China, insists we cannot take China at its word… because the country “lies constantly.”

So if China has first-strike capability and could take out our grid – isn’t this the equivalent of China having a full-on nuclear arsenal and us having none?

Typically in nuclear warfare, there’s deterrence linked to the reality that if they fire on us, we’d fire back… However, according to this new report, we may never have that opportunity. The EMP Task Force’s June report reveals that China has built a network of satellites, high-speed missiles, and super-electromagnetic pulse weapons that could effectively melt down our electric grid, sizzle our critical communications infrastructure, and even take out the ability of our aircraft carrier and military groups to respond.

And China is well aware of the power that it holds. Chinese military documents contain references to making EMP attacks against the United States as a way to succeed in war. Shen Weiguang’s World War, The Third World War – Total Information Warfare, the People’s Liberation Army’s quasi-textbook on information warfare, argues that China should be prepared to exploit an EMP offensively.

And according to the new EMP report, China did just that…

Truly, this report should have been the headline in every single news organization this summer, on every show, in every paper… But it wasn’t.

Bottom line: If China has this capability, then we have reason to be extremely cautious and extremely worried.  This kind of attack could shut down our country, leaving us in a state of paralysis… and ultimately, whatever is left of our country, would be left hostage to China.

Chang partly blames the power companies, saying, “they’ve fought all sorts of attempts that require them to harden grids.” While true, that’s in part because these utilities are run as monopolies with controlled rates that are set by the government. As such, there’s little profit incentive for them to improve their infrastructure.

At this point, ensuring the safety of our grid should really be placed in the hands of the Department of Defense.  Forget private companies… It’s now a matter of national security.

This isn’t the first time our government has been warned. In 2008, the EMP Commission set up by Congress said a largely digitized U.S. could be left black for up to a year as a result of an EMP disruption.

And yet, apparently little was done to address the potential crisis. Eight years later, in 2016, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (“GAO”) reported that the federal government failed to implement a series of recommendations that had been made to prevent massive outages triggered by an EMP incursion.

Isn’t that always the way?  Our government bureaucracy at work…

The GAO noted that the Department of Homeland Security (“DHS”) and the Department of Energy (“DOE”) had not “established a coordinated approach to identifying and implementing key risk management activities to address EMP risks” and that the securing of the grid was far from the top priority.

How is this not a top priority if 90% of America’s population could be wiped out within a year?

Comment: Clearly, based on the information you have just read, it is therefore incumbent for every individual to take responsibility for their own protection and from it, security.  Thankfully, the resources and technology to help prevent the type of destruction that can happen is available and fairly reasonable in cost.  That is why a Safe Haven Home and upcoming informational resources and recommendations can help you tremendously.  We cannot emphasize enough that utilizing Safe Haven Home design concepts for energy self reliance, EMP resistance, security systems and such are very reasonable in cost, especially in new construction.  Thankfully these improvements not only pertain to new construction but can be implemented in existing construction as well.  We highly recommend you consider these potentially life saving applications before it’s too late.

A Safe Escape

When it All Began

"A Safe Escape"

What Makes a Safe Haven Community so Special

When it All Began

On Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025 the unimaginable happened. America suffered an EMP attack!  We were told that its origin could not be ascertained, as by this time Russia, China, North Korea, India and Iran not only had land based intercontinental ballistic missiles but also intercontinental capable submarines. Sadly, our defense department could not determine which country shot off the nuclear missiles which were intended to cause a national EMP.  Not only that, although our surveillance technology was capable of detecting the launch in international waters, it was so close to our shore that it took less than 10 minutes for it to achieve it’s most damaging effect.  And the greatest damage was the takedown of America’s national electric grid, the intended goal of this attack.  It had been predicted that a nuclear EMP event over our country could cause greater overall damage than even a number of detonated nuclear bombs going off in key cities and strategic locations.  It was so hard to believe because as you looked over the landscape, it was as though everything was fine and nothing happened.  Even the birds were still happily tweeting away.  It was at night when you noticed something was definitely off.  All was dark except the shining of the stars and moon.  And a new type of darkness began in our country that was never experienced before.

That day, all the consequences of what one would expect from a nuclear EMP attack transpired as predicted, plus some.  However, since we had significantly prepared for this possibility, we really felt confident that we could weather the storm so much better than the rest of those who had not.  The operative word and action in this regard was “preparation”.

Let me explain what we had done to prepare.  In my investigations, it was highly recommended that a “refuge” location be found to avoid the extreme civil unrest that would likely come following an electric grid takedown or any other major catastrophe of this nature.  This decision by and large would be become the safest and most secure move one could make to avoid the consequences of such an event (CLICK HERE to read what one can expect in the first 40 days of such an event).  However, my wife and I had important positions that required us to live where we were. Besides this, we also had family and close friends that we didn’t want to leave.  I’ve learned that nearly 80% – 90% of Americans are in this position.  Yes, many like us would like to check out “refuge” locations in safe regions of America and even foreign lands and desire to move there, but in the final analysis we needed to first concentrate on establishing a “Safe Haven Home” in the area that we called home.

Since I was a builder and knew how to build a “Safe Haven Home”, I sought a single building lot that would provide the most protection for the area we were living in.  Thankfully, we came upon a gated small subdivision that offered lots for sale.  One of the initial concerns that needs to be addressed is finding a secure and protected location as possible.  Usually, this means moving to as much of a rural area as possible, especially one removed from a densely populated area.  Finding a gated small subdivision is highly recommended as a gated community would provide the first line of defense in keeping unwanted intruders out.  However, these may be few and far between and if so, you need to then find as remote of a lot as possible, especially if gated communities are not readily available in your area.  But no matter whether you can find that “safe” rural lot location or not, we highly recommend that you install a gated entry to your property and if possible, build a protective perimeter around the front.  This can be done with secure fencing made of brick or a stucco block wall or by simply planting thick and fast growing vegetation around your property’s perimeter. These help to hinder and possibly even stop intruders from entering your “compound”. As you can imagine, this is not the time to be “showing off” your stuff.

Another feature that I look for in purchasing a lot is the ability to install a water well and septic system for private use.  The advantages are obvious.  With the grid going down, your city would not be able to supply you with city water.  And city sewer systems would be rendered inoperative because lift stations will not work, including the sewage treatment plants.  The consequences of this is that your toilets and showers will back up with sewage. Yuk!  (Note: even if you have to live in a city with no ability to install a private water supply or septic system, our “Practical Considerations for Building a Safe Home” will give you some solutions for this dilemma.).

Most septic systems function on gravity, hence we don’t have to worry about electrical power to operate them.  However, this would not be true with a water well.  Most artesian water wells use submersible pump technology to provide superior service for water availability.  But they operate on electricity.  How then do we get water into our house?  The next paragraph gives the solution.

With the technology available today, an electrical solar generation system with lithium battery backup is capable of powering practically the entire home throughout the whole day and night.  Because we live in Florida where central air conditioning is a must, we elected not to upgrade to a massive 240 volt system that would be needed to air condition our whole house.  The reason is it would use far too much electricity which would expend a battery based reserve system (the only exception to this would be the use of a secondary battery system, which will be explained later). Instead, we chose to install a small wall A.C. unit located in the family room that was capable of being closed off.  This was sufficient for our entire family of six, as we would all sleep there when it was absolutely imperative to have air conditioning available.  In Florida, this was practically a requirement.  From mid – May to the end October nighttime temperatures would often hover between 75 and 80 degrees.  Some would question the need for A.C. at what appears to be moderate temps.  The problem is not with the temperature, but the humidity levels.  Humidity levels between 80% – 90% are typical during the hurricane season marked between June 1 – Nov. 1.  Even night-time temperatures between 75 to 80 degrees with this level of humidity makes for extremely stifling conditions. During the day, the humidity would usually drop off but sadly was replaced with temperatures usually reaching 90 to 95 degrees. Combined with much greater sun intensity, heat indexes between 105 – 115 degrees in Florida are not uncommon during the extended summer/hurricane season.  As an interesting bit of information, population levels in Florida have skyrocketed to 23 million for the year 2025. I truly believe that if air conditioning did not exist, Florida’s population would most likely be well under 6 million (it was recorded at 5.8 million in 1965) due to it’s rather intense summer subtropical climate.

What is so beneficial with solar generated electric power systems is the availability of programs that help finance the costs of purchase and installation. In many instances out of pocket expenses are minimal if not zero. Combined with electric energy credits offered by the government and electric energy buy – back programs offered by the electric companies, solar generation systems are well worth the investment.  However their greatest benefit, by leaps and bounds, is the ability to generate your own electricity when the grid goes down.  One needs to recognize that with a national grid collapse, especially caused by an EMP, it could well take between one to two years for America to regain full functionality due to transformer shortage that still exists. Therefore, solar power systems will be one of your best solutions in preparing for a serious catastrophe (i.e. grid failure) while beforehand helping to save money and the environment.  I truly believe it is a win-win situation.

The next most dangerous element regarding an EMP event is the destruction of all electronic devices in your home.  An EMP produces extremely high magnetic flux conditions in the atmosphere, which descends to ground level and effects two groups of devices.  The first group affects all your devices connected to the household electrical system. The reason for this is that an EMP uses power lines as a highly conductive antennae to multiply its effects.  This causes a power surge so powerful, that it blows out any and all electric devices connected to it.  Hence refrigerators, microwaves, washers, dryers, A.C. units and practically all devices that use microchip technology will be destroyed by this extremely high burst of surge energy.  The only way to prevent this is to employ a whole house surge protector.  Numerous electric companies are now offering such protection at a monthly cost.  Or, you can purchase a surge protector for a one time cost (check out our Resources link by CLICKING HERE).

The next EMP danger to all your electronic devices are those not connected to the electrical system of your house.  These are affected by the direct EMP burst on the item itself.  There has been controversy lately as to whether this is a real danger or not.  The answer to this controversy rests on the distance the EMP source emanates from your house.  But the problem is who knows where this source will emanate from?  Moreover, what if the source is a super powerful solar flare(s) of the nature that took place with the Carrington Event?  If so, it doesn’t matter where you are as the whole earth will be affected by the extreme global ionization of the upper atmosphere.  Therefore, it becomes incumbent to make your whole house as EMP resistant as possible.  And as we have said before, this can be done at a very reasonable cost, making it one of the most value based protections you can employ.  Again check our our “Resources” link for availability.

Making a single family residence EMP resistant employs two primary methods.  The first is to protect against electric power line surge coming into your home.  This is done with a surge protector as mentioned earlier.  These are available from most electric power companies (check with your local electric utility) or are available at our website. The second method is to protect your home with an all encompassing protective EMP shield. In fact, there is even EMP resistant paint available that can be used on existing homes at a very reasonable cost.  Adding this to a new construction home in addition to a total house EMP shield only adds greater resistance against a very powerful EMP, possibly providing 100% protection.  We explain our methods and supply contacts for accomplishing this in the book, “Guidelines to Establishing a Safe Home”, again available from our website.

Other beneficial and protective methodology is covered in the book.  For example, the book covers the benefits of constructing a basement whenever possible, installing a water collection system, setting up a greenhouse in your garage and numerous other concepts and ideas to make your personal home as independent and secure as possible.  We also cover making a single family a nuclear resistant home, which becomes somewhat more expensive and demanding.  Nonetheless, many of our readers may well wish to be informed of what it takes to outfit your home to this degree.

We want to emphasize that building a “Safe Haven Home” is relatively affordable.  Using the financial options available to install a total solar generating system, your out of pocket expenses for becoming energy independent may be close to zero as mentioned earlier (especially true with Federal solar credits being offered).  I estimate making a home fully EMP resistant (meaning whole house coverage, not 100% resistant capable) should cost anywhere between 3%-5% of the total construction cost.  Considering the level of protection this can offer, we believe it is well worth the expense.  Implementing the cost of adding other construction enhancements to establish a very robust “Safe Haven Home”, we estimate costs should come in around 10% higher than with a standard build home (note: this figure does not include the costs for protecting a “Safe Haven Home” against nuclear blasts).  So, if your looking at a house that will cost approximately $500,000 to build on a standard basis, to make a very robust “Safe Haven Home”, you would have to add around $50,000.  Again, we believe this is well worth the protection and energy independence you can achieve. Moreover, we believe these additions to the house will increase its net value well over the cost of the improvements upon resale.

Through the course of my research, I discovered that the anticipated civil anarchy that would take place following the takedown of the national grid (whether by an EMP event, cyberattack or nuclear holocaust) can become life threatening.  As such, even a “Safe Haven Home” located in a gated community within a fairly dense population (i.e. large cities over one million including adjacent metropolitan areas) may be in danger of being over-run by masses of people wanting to find safety, food and secure shelter.  For this reason we decided to build a second “Safe Haven Home” in a more remote location which I define as a true refuge area. A second resource is in the process of being published which details the safest locations that can be found not only in America, state by state, but includes a survey of the safest nations one would wish to consider fleeing to if desired.  Check out this website, www.Safe-Haven-Home.com, for upcoming details on its release.

"A Safe Escape"

We were really blessed in being able to work out the financial arrangements to build our second refuge/retreat location.  We were able to accomplish this with the assistance of the “Smart Home Program”, which was conceived of through our first building company, Quality Affordable Homes (www.Quality-Affordable-Homes.com).  Back in the 90’s, the “Smart Home Program” revealed a wealth generation technique using single family housing as a tool to allow an individual or families to realistically become  millionaires (or more).  With the incredible increase in home prices within the last two years, this could even allow one to become twice the millionaire within a very short time frame.  We invite you to check out in the link above titled, “Become a Millionaire or More”.  Or, if you wish a more detailed analysis of how this is realistically possible, check out  www.Quality-Affordable-Homes.com.

We chose a very beautiful and safe location in western Tennessee as our second refuge/retreat location. And indeed, what a blessing this has become.  Not only is it a Safe Haven Home, a home that we can flee to in the event Florida poses to be a danger (including hurricane dangers that avail themselves all too often), but we are also able to derive income from our Tennessee home using the “Smart Home Program” to help pay for its expenses. Hence, we have now increased our net worth significantly due to our real estate holdings. Again, we highly recommend you consider the “Smart Home Program” of enhanced wealth generation for your benefit.  This is especially true for a second home, as it can help provide significant income by way of rental, even if you forego the Safe Haven Home design concepts.  The point is such a dwelling will not only leave you a “getaway” retreat to alleviate danger concerns, but also offer an opportunity to earn significant income so the house pays for itself twice over.

I would like to conclude this short presentation with a quick run-down of how we responded when the EMP struck.  Because we had an EMP resistant home, we were able to maintain communication with our radio and dialed into the Emergency Broadcast Service.  Thankfully, we were also prepared to leave within six hours of when the event struck.  If intending to travel any distances, it’s extremely important that one leaves within a 48 hour time frame from when the initial event occurs.  Usually the first two days are the safest to travel.  After the initial shock of such an event, people are generally civil and willing to help each other, which is not an uncommon trait during emergency conditions.  However, after 48 hours many people will begin to realize that their food supplies are waning, lights/heat and air conditioning units may not operate, stores become emptied and desperation begins to set in. The maximum window of time before serious civil unrest begins to take place is usually within 5-7 days. It’s for this reason, the sooner you can leave the safer it will be (to read what happens within the first 40 days of such a catastrophe, CLICK HERE)

In 2025, electric car infrastructure was still not quite in place to provide similar service one could get with gasoline/diesel powered vehicles.  Although we totally support renewable energy usage (primarily for the cost savings), we kept one gasoline powered vehicle as our “getaway” car so to speak.  Besides, with the national grid taken down, we most likely would not be able to “fill-up” with either gasoline or electric fuel.  To combat this problem, we bought a small utility trailer and outfitted it with all the necessary items we would want to take in such an emergency.  In this situation, we knew we were going away for a relatively lengthy period of time, so we made sure to close up our home.  We also took all our important financial documents with us since our new base was no doubt going to become our operations center for the forseeable future.  Besides safety equipment, emergency provisions and a “bug-out” pak, we also loaded an additional 30 gallons of fuel in 5 gallon plastic cans in the event gas stations would be inoperative because of the EMP (as a side note, besides our house we had outfitted our cars with EMP surge protectors which also safeguarded our vehicles).  We assumed all gas stations would be inoperative as they lack back-up systems to allow the pumps to work.  And even if they did, electronic transactions via credit cards would not process anyway.  This turned out to be such a boon for us as we would never have made it to our destination if it weren’t for the additional gasoline we took.

Our trip to Tennessee went much better than expected.  Because we left so soon, we were able to use the interstate system for 90% of the trip.  The only place we took secondary roads were around the expansive Atlanta, Georgia metropolitan area.  From the book which came out in 2023 titled, “Safe Destinations to Retreat and Refuge in Case of Emergency”, we were able to navigate a safer passage around the Atlanta area. Although it took us an extra 6 hours to make it to our destination due to stalled vehicles, traffic density and other issues, we did make it having used only an extra 15 gallons of our containerized fuel.

We were so thankful when we entered the Safe Haven Community that was established specifically for like minded individuals such as ourselves. This community came about due to the amazing response we received from our website, Safe-Haven-Homes.com.  On the front page of the website is a link titled “Safe Haven Communities”.  Pertinent and up to date information is given regarding your interest in such a community. Here is where interested individuals can  leave their contact information regarding interests in such a community.  Needless to say, the response was greater than we ever expected.  Let me share what makes a Safe Haven Community so special.

What Makes a Safe Haven Community so Special

Probably the most important facet of a Safe Haven Community, besides the infrastructure and design of the community, are its people.  The majority of its residents are not only like minded but have a deep care and concern for each other.  This is one of its most valuable characteristics of being in community.  As such, we were able to identify each member’s area of expertise and their desire to help out.  Whenever a “town hall” meeting was held, even members who were out of town would join in on a “Zoom” video conference call.  Not only were concerns addressed, but we were able to identify individuals who had specific training and abilities for the safety and protection of the community.  We had doctors, mechanics, farmers, ex-military individuals and so many more.  Almost all were willing to give freely of their time for the benefit of the community.  What was so wonderful is that instead of typical rancorous or combative “homeowner” association meetings, these were positive and uplifting. It really showed that there are many wonderful and helpful Americans who still care for each other.  Most followed the second most important command that Jesus gave in His teachings, “Love your neighbor as yourself”.  Of course, on rare occasion there would be a disagreement, but this was quickly settled by an arbitration board.  To my knowledge, I cannot think of any individual that left with a “chip on their shoulder”.  It was such a blessing that we often longed for, to be able to live in community with people who truly care for each other.  How important this became when the EMP attack became reality.

Regarding the infrastructure and features of the community.  The community was set in a semi-rural area that was well hidden and off the beaten path.  It’s location was based on states that were most libertarian and conservative in their social and political makeup.  As such, support for the Constitution and all its amendment rights were recognized (especially the right to bear arms). Whenever possible, the community was established near a medium sized city that was deemed safest in comparison with others nearby.  Most of the members felt it was important to be near retail outlets and available services, especially medical care. As well, many wanted the connectivity to sports, art and social groups such as found in church association(s) which often can only be found in more populated areas. The key strategy for establishing a Safe Haven Community was being located in a “safe” state and in the safest area of that state.

The community was not only gated, but was monitored “in-house” by the communities own security system.  As you can imagine, this was primarily taken care of by the former police officers and ex-military members that were part of the community. During the course of time, a three phase defense perimeter was planned around the community. Phase one consisted of planting a thick (nearly impenetrable) wall of vegetation around the perimeter of the entire community. As funds became available, phase two involved the installation of a security fence behind the wall of vegetation.  Lastly, phase three included the erection of a solid wall. The community realized phase three was going to be fairly expensive, but was totally agreed on and would take place whenever funds became available.

The community consisted of roughly one acre plots so independent artesian wells and septic systems could be installed.  Such plots also allowed for homeowners to establish their own gardens.  At the same time, it also allowed for solar “gardens” to be developed for those individuals who did not want their solar systems installed on roofs.  It was decided that the gardens would be walled off with a perimeter of fencing or shrubbery so they would be hidden.  This was not done so much for security purposes (although it did help to keep larger animals such as deer out which can consume a good portion of a garden) as it was for aesthetics, for there were fairly expensive homes that homeowners wanted to maintain in an upgraded manner.  The community felt this was fair.

Another idea the community proposed was to set aside approximately 10-20 acres for a small but suitable “animal” farm.  This consisted of cows (for diary products), chickens (for eggs), and horses for recreation.  Those who wanted to partake in this venture would be responsible for its finances.  Of course, the involved members of the farm would be charged a nominal fee for the use of this land which would help finance other needs of the community.  It really turned out to be a great set-up, as both adults and children learned the basics of farming, growing a garden, canning and horse riding for recreation.  After the EMP, we were so blessed by the “farm” as it provided great food resources when so little was available at the grocery stores.

Of course, our “Safe Haven Home” was built to similar specifications as the one we had built in Florida. Plus, we incorporated the “Smart Home Program” as well to help accelerate the payments of the small mortgage we took out.  Although we had a small garden in the back, we decided to outfit our garage to be able to grow a garden as well.  We decided to do so in case of nuclear fallout.  Thankfully, of the three nuclear EMP devices that were exploded in the east, Midwest and west of our country, the one east was actually far away enough not to affect us via nuclear fallout. However, you can never determine this ahead of time.  We also were one of the fortunate ones to be able to reserve a Ford “Lightening” truck, the 100% electric pick-up that had the advertised capability to power a whole house for up to a week.  Of course we had a solar generation setup on our Safe Haven Home, but we decided to keep this vehicle up in our Safe Haven Community knowing that fuel, whether electric or oil based, was not going to be readily available if at all. It really was an incredible blessing for us and the community, as we kept most of the precious gasoline for the community’s tractor. We also realized the great resource that our electric solar system was capable of.  We bought all battery operated tools; lawnmowers, roto-tillers, drills, saws, trimmers, blowers, etc.  For all practical purposes, we really did not need a fossil fuel based backup system.  However, we did install a wood burning stove as a final precaution in case of emergency.

We are now nearing the first year anniversary of when the EMP went off over our country.  Much of the country has suffered immensely.  Many Americans either died or were murdered due to the anarchy, pestilences and/or starvation.  It hasn’t certainly been peaches and cream for the community either.  We lost 3 community members due to the lack of proper medical treatment which wasn’t available during this horrible time. In days previous, advanced and available medical care would probably have saved their lives.  But for the most part, when we compare the living standards and safety we have enjoyed to the rest of the nation, it’s almost like we’re living in heaven.  We are thankful and blessed that the Lord provided the means and capability for us to prepare for such a time as this.
